What’s Included with my 4D growth ultrasound ?

A Foetal Growth scan, otherwise known as a Well-being pregnancy or Reassurance scan, is performed to assess the growth of your baby and its organs.

It is performed from 24 to 32 weeks. This coincides with the optimal time window to obtain 4D pictures of your baby.

At this stage of the pregnancy, an ultrasound can be utilised to assess your baby’s growth to ensure normal development.

Measurements are plotted on a distribution graph for the baby’s specific age. This allows an estimation of birth weight.

Measurements are taken of:

  • Your baby’s head circumference
  • The abdominal circumference
  • The length of the thigh bone (femur)

Other structures assessed include:

  • The position of the placenta
  • The amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby
  • Your baby’s position and movements

At this stage, ultrasound is able to obtain a reconstructed picture of your baby in 3D and 4D giving you the opportunity to see your baby’s facial, hand and feet appearances.

With you lying on your back on a couch, ultrasound gel is placed on the skin of your abdomen and the ultrasound probe is placed gently to obtain pictures of the womb.

Your doctor or midwife will want to know the results of your scan and are likely to ask you for a copy. If you have any concerns about your scan, we can arrange for you to discuss with an on-site/local Consultant Obstetrician.

No specific preparation is required.
