What is a foot Ultrasound and what does it involve?
Foot ultrasound examination is primarily used to assess the structures around the foot joint.
These include:
- Foot (tarsal, metatarsal and interphalangeal) joints
- Plantar plate
- Flexor and extensor tendons and lining (sheath)
- Muscles around the foot
- Nerves
Ultrasound of the knee can assist in the diagnosis of:
- Pain
- Restricted range of movement
- Swelling
- Lumps and bumps around the foot
These can be due to:
- Inflammation of the joint (synovitis) – generalised swelling and foot pain
- Plantar plate rupture (tuft toe) – pain, restricted movement, swelling and toe deformity
- Flexor and extensor tendon pathology (tendinosis and tenosynovitis) – pain and swelling
- Morton’s neuroma – Forefoot pain and numbness (between the toes)
- Soft tissue tumour
