A breast ultrasound enables your healthcare provider to identify and diagnose breast abnormalities and problems, such as lumps and breast implant ruptures.

Ultrasound is not typically used alone to scan for and detect breast cancer in patients over 40. However, if you are under 40, your doctor may request a breast cancer ultrasound.

While mammography is the only breast cancer screening tool shown to actively minimise deaths caused by breast cancer, it cannot find all breast cancers in all people.

Sometimes, abnormalities and lesions are not detectable nor easy to interpret using mammograms. In these cases, ultrasound is used as a supplementary imagining technology.

No. Our female health assessment uses ultrasound to look inside your body for abnormalities and areas of concern, but that’s no reason to put off your health check until something feels wrong.

Ultrasound doesn’t use radiation. Instead, it captures images using high-frequency sound waves. The ultrasound wand, called a transducer, is placed outside of your body – the procedure is non-invasive from start to finish.

If you are undergoing an abdomen ultrasound, we suggest fasting for four hours before your appointment. This ensures our specialists can see your gallbladder. 

If you are undergoing a pelvic ultrasound as a part of your private health assessment, please drink four glasses of water 45 to 60 minutes before your examination. This enables our specialists to assess the pelvic organs properly.

Otherwise, there is very little preparation required. You may like to remove your jewellery and wear a top that is quick and easy to take on and off – during your breast ultrasound, you will be asked to undress from the waist up.

If our specialists detect an abnormality during your examination, they will advise you on the next steps. Do not panic – the good news is you have caught the abnormality and can move forward with diagnosis and potential treatment.

If our specialists detect something serious, they will write urgently to your doctor to request a prompt appointment.

If you have a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound, you must drink 4 to 6 glasses of water about an hour before the test. This will fill your bladder and make for a clearer picture.

If you are having both transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic ultrasounds done, you’ll start with a full bladder. You will be asked to empty it before the transvaginal ultrasound.

No other preparation is required.

You will be taken care of by ultrasound specialists during your female health assessment. It’s only natural to feel a little anxious, but remember that we are here to make your experience positive.

Most ultrasounds begin by clearing the examination area of clothes, jewellery, and any other accessories. You will then be asked to lie down on our examination table.

Then, a cool gel will be applied to the target area – your skin’s warmth will soon heat the cold gel. The gel is water-based and, therefore, easy to remove from skin and clothing.

The specialist will then move a small wand over the area to capture images. The wand, called a transducer, sends sound waves into your body – the process is completely painless.

In most cases, ultrasounds take less than 30 minutes. You will receive a high-resolution digital copy of your images the same day as your exam.

There is no particular type of care required after a female health check ultrasound. You may resume your regular diet and daily activities unless your doctor advises you differently.

There are no confirmed adverse biological effects on patients or instrument operators caused by exposures to ultrasound at the intensity levels used in diagnostic ultrasound.

But depending on your particular results, the doctor may give you additional or alternative instructions after the procedure.
