What symptoms should I look out for?
Regardless of your age, it’s crucial you become familiar with the look and feel of your breasts.
That way, if you experience a sudden or gradual change, you can visit a trusted breast consultant as soon as possible.
In general, you should look out for the following symptoms and changes:
- A lump or lumpiness
- Thickening of your breast tissue
- Changes in the skin of your breast, such as a rash, discolouration, dimpling, or puckering
- Ongoing and unusual breast pain or discomfort
- Changes in the size or shape of your breast
- Changes to your nipple’s size or colour, a nipple rash, or nipple discharge
- Changes to your breast implants
If you are unsure, err on the side of caution. Seek private breast care advice if you experience any of the above or some other change to your breasts or chest area.
Your doctor can answer your questions and provide personalised guidance.
What does a breast lump feel like?
A lump in your breast is one of the most common signs of breast cancer.
However, these lumps can vary significantly from person to person. It might be large or small and painless or painful.
It might be underneath the skin of your breast or closer to your armpit.
It doesn’t matter how it feels; if you notice a lump in your breast, visit our breast clinic.
Our private breast consultation service can give you the answers you need to rest easy.
When should I visit a private breast clinic?
Breast screening is an important part of any person’s healthcare routine.
While most breast changes are not caused by cancer, early detection of breast cancer empowers you to seek treatment quickly and improves the likelihood of survival.
That being said, you should visit a breast clinic as soon as you notice a change in your breast – whether you are 25 or 75.
You should also schedule regular breast screening, as some people who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have signs or symptoms of the disease.
If you are aged 50 to 71, you should have your breasts checked every three years. If you have a significant family history of breast cancer or are concerned you have an elevated risk of developing the disease, schedule an appointment with one of our specialist breast consultants for tailored advice. You may require additional screenings.
How do I prepare for my breast consultation?
Breast consultations are relatively quick and fuss-free – there is no need to make any special preparations, and you can return to your regular day-to-day activities immediately following your appointment.
Your doctor will ask you to undress from the waist up, so you might like to wear clothing that is easy to take on and off. You will be given privacy to remove your clothes and to put them back on afterwards.
You might also want to take off any long necklaces that could get in the way of the examination.
What does breast screening look for?
Examinations of your breasts and armpit area look for more than breast cancer. The screening process will also help identify the following:
- Breast infections and abscesses
- Benign (non-cancerous) lumps, such as fibroadenomas
- Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS)
- Breast implant issues, such as implant rupture
- Breast and skin cysts
- Swollen lymph nodes, which may signify cancer, infection, or inflammation
Can men get breast cancer?
Yes. All people can get breast cancer, regardless of gender. Just under 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year.
If you are a man and notice a change in your breast tissue, make an appointment. Our compassionate, highly qualified healthcare professionals can assess your symptoms, perform a non-invasive exam, and give you the answers you deserve.
What happens during a physical breast exam?
If you have never had a physical breast exam, it’s only natural to feel a little nervous. Your comfort is our priority, and we strive to make your experience a positive one.
A physical breast examination helps doctors identify abnormalities in the breast tissue. Breast tissue covers a large area stretching from the middle of your chest up toward your collarbone and out to your armpit.
First, you will be asked to lie down. Then, your doctor will examine your breast tissue using their hands. They may apply some pressure with their fingers to ensure lumps in the deeper tissue are not missed.
Your doctor will also examine the lymph nodes under your arm and above and below your collarbone.
The examination should not be uncomfortable – unless you have a painful lump. Let your doctor know if you experience any pain.
If a lump or abnormality is discovered, your doctor will take note of its size, texture, and shape. They will then talk you through follow-up examinations and diagnostic measures to determine the nature of the lump.

I was very concerned after noticing a lump in my breast. Unfortunately due to the pressures on the NHS clinics at the moment I was told instead of being seen within two weeks it would be within five. I found this clinic and made my appointment for the next day. The staff I met and the Doctor was excellent. He explained everything he was doing, and what he found and what it all meant. I thankfully left the clinic happier than when I arrived. I have received my full report with my images that I can send to my clinic prior to my appointment. If anyone should find themselves in my position I would recommend this clinic

Good availability of slots as had just started new job and was limited in when I could go. Better than other central London ones I tried. Appointment – nurse was kind and professional. The radiologist was lovely, very pleasant, professional and information and reassuring. He told me as he was doing ultrasound what he was seeing to avoid worrying me. Was very impressed and I’m glad I know about it and would recommend, have done already.
