Frequently Asked Questions

Breast implants rarely cause issues. However, in some cases, complications arise. Regular breast implant ultrasounds can help you feel confident and informed about your health.

What’s more, the sooner you detect a potential problem, the faster you can remedy it.

The quick, easy, and private procedure can also identify a capsular contracture – which could cause a ripple in your implant – diagnose lumps, notify you that your implants need replacing, and more.

Breast implant checks using ultrasound technology are an easy part of your healthcare routine.

According to the FDA, you should have your silicone breast implants checked via ultrasound five years after your surgery and every two years after that.

This ensures silent ruptures are detected sooner rather than later.

Women with breast implants have an increased risk of developing a rare cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL.

This cancer forms in the scar tissue capsule and fluid that sits around the implant. In some instances, BIA-ALCL can spread from the breasts to the entire body.

BIA-ALCL generally takes eight to 10 years to develop, and symptoms arise no sooner than one year following surgery.

The most frequently reported symptoms are pain and swelling in and around the breast.

Other symptoms include breast enlargement, lumps in the breast or armpit, redness, breast asymmetry, and sudden changes in breast appearance.

Many BIA-ALCL symptoms are usual and expected after surgery, so keep in mind that it is very uncommon for this cancer to form less than 12 months after placement.

Your best defence against BIA-ALCL is regular breast ultrasounds. When caught early, BIA-ALCL is generally curable.

Yes. If you have silicone breast implants, an ultrasound can diagnose a breast implant rupture.

Common symptoms of a rupture include changes in the shape and size of the breast, firmness, swelling, and increasing pain.

Sometimes, a breast implant rupture does not trigger any noticeable symptoms.

These are called silent ruptures and can be detected during your regular breast implant ultrasound check-up.

Yes. An ultrasound can detect and help diagnose lumps and tumours in your breasts if you have implants.

Doctors often request a breast ultrasound if they find a breast abnormality during a mammogram or physical exam, such as a lump, tender area, or change in skin texture.

Your ultrasound will assist your doctor in determining whether the lump is a solid tumour or fluid-filled cyst, how big it is, and where it is located.

Ultrasounds are relaxed, swift, and non-invasive, and very little preparation is required before your appointment.

You do not need to avoid eating or drinking.

However, to make your appointment as easy and comfortable as possible, we recommend wearing a top that is quick to remove.

Our specialists will ask you to undress from the waist up.

We also suggest removing your jewellery and avoiding powders, cosmetics, and lotions on your breast area.

When it comes to your health, you cannot leave anything to chance.

Ultrasound is an imaging technology that is harmless, fast, and non-invasive.

A breast implant ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to generate images of your breast tissue, implants, and surrounding structures.

Ultrasounds do not use ionising radiation like CT scans and X-rays, making them a safe option for those not suited to radiation-based imaging solutions.

At Harley Street Ultrasound, your comfort is our top priority. Our specialists aim to give you a positive experience.

If you have any questions about how ultrasounds work, please do not hesitate to reach out.

We’d be more than happy to ease any concerns you may have.

The images from your ultrasound with Harley Street Ultrasound Group will be available on the same day as your appointment via your computer or smartphone.

This empowers you to share your results with your trusted healthcare professional of your choice.

While you will need a follow-up appointment with your doctor, you won’t need a second ultrasound unless your doctor requests one.

If so, you can book a procedure using our online booking system or by phoning our friendly team at 0203 904 4441.

Although the breast ultrasound procedure is straightforward, our dedicated team is committed to providing professional service and an unmatched level of care.

Here’s how the procedure unfolds:

  • First, one of our highly qualified doctors will ask you to undress from the waist up and lie on our ultrasound table.
  • They will apply a clear, conductive gel to your breasts, which may feel a little cold. The gel helps the sound waves travel through your skin and tissue. They may also dim the lights.
  • Your doctor will move a wand-like device called a transducer over your breasts. This sends and receives sound waves, which then form real-time images of the inside structures of your breasts – including your implants.
  • Finally, you will be given tissues to remove the gel and privacy to get dressed.

Your ultrasound will take 30 minutes to complete, and your images will be available via any device shortly after your appointment.

The procedure should be totally painless unless you have a tender lump – if you feel discomfort, please let your doctor know.

Many of our patients are concerned that if they come to us for an ultrasound, they won’t be able to go back to public health. That simply is not the case.

Our goal is to give you answers as quickly as possible and get you on the right treatment path fast – no strings attached.

When you come to us, you will be seen by a qualified specialist who can determine if your situation is serious or not that same day.

We don’t want you to wait weeks on end for an appointment because every minute counts when it comes to something as important as your health.

If your situation is serious, our specialist will write to your doctor on the NHS advising them that you need an urgent appointment.
